BANUNULE PRIMARY SCHOOL A School for Orphans and Underpreviledged Children
WELCOME Banunule is Situated in the parish of Kisugu, five kilometres south of Kampala city centre, Banunule Primary School provides free education to orphaned and underprivileged children who would otherwise receive no formal schooling. In principle, primary education is free for all children of primary school age in Uganda. However, this does not cover the cost of uniform, shoes, sports kit and scholastic materials, and as a result many students are denied a primary education. Banunule is the only school in Kisugu to provide all these things enabling its children to receive schooling. In addition, medical care, breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, and in some cases, supper, are also provided. Banunule is a private school and relies solely on donations, mainly from foreign donors. It receives no support from the Ugandan government. A number of the children in Banunule have previously lived on the streets. All have faced trauma in their lives. For example, the death of parents and other family members through AIDS which has decimated the family structure, emotionally and physically, or they have witnessed the murder of family members by rebels in northern Uganda. The children live with local foster families all of whom are themselves underprivileged. For them, the children's arrival in Kampala is an extra burden. Not only does Banunule provide a very good education to children who would otherwise receive no education, it provides stability for those who are often not wanted by their foster parents. Banunule is a very special place
